Fresh Milk

September Morning

Our latest addition to our farm is “Daisy” our American Milking Shorthorn.  We love the fresh milk!  Daisy gives us 5-6 gallons a day on pasture.   When we looked for a cow; we didn’t want some cow bred for confinement dairy operations producing milk that required a huge supply of grain to sustain her.   The American Milking Shorthorn does great on pasture and doesn’t require the endless amounts of grain the traditional Holstein requires.

We now have fresh cream, yogurt, ice cream, sour cream, butter, buttermilk, besides the milk.   Hopefully we will be making cheese shortly.

There is no waste on the farm.   Any extras we have the pigs, chickens, dogs and cats clean up.

I am enjoying your blog. I love reading about homesteading and farming the way it use to be and should be.

      Gigi,

Thanks. It wasn’t long ago we were living in a sub-division, and now we are loving the farm life.

Yesterday we harvested honey from our hive and had quite a time. I’ll get that post up with pictures soon.

Thanks for the comment I enjoy sharing our experiences.
